Exercise 3: Schools for Africa 3

Schools for Africa 3
3Choose the correct answers.

Ten young people are going to Kenya this year as part of a project to help children in Africa. They are part of an international team that is going to build a community school in a small village in Kenya.

"Most families in Kenya are too poor to go to government schools and the schools are usually far away, so many children can't get any education. This way all the children in the village will have access to free education," says project organizer Max Emerson, who set up the project three years ago.

With money from donations and hundreds of charity events back home in the UK, Green Schools for Africa aims to build ten schools by the year 2020. As well as money, they also receive donations of children's clothes, books, pens, pencils and old computers.

The volunteers will use local materials to construct the buildings - mud, clay, wood and straw. And they will install solar panels to power up the computers and the other electrical equipment in the school. This way, the schools will be able to use local energy sources and it won't cost a lot of money.

Education is so important in helping communities to have a better standard of living. Educated children will get better-paid jobs. They'll be healthier and happier. Education is the foundation for better living conditions for everyone.

Volunteers will have basic training. As well as learning about construction, they will also get the chance to travel around the communities they are working in and get to know the people they are helping. They will learn many useful skills, and they'll also find out about other cultures. When they leave, they will feel that they have done something important.

"We're going to learn so much, not only about Kenya and the people, but also about the experience of running a project", says Zara Marshall. "When I come back, I'm going to share my experience with students in my school and hopefully inspire them to go out and do something to help other people." For these ten volunteers, it's definitely going to be a life-changing experience.
